| The Thomson brand has been evolving for 130 years and stands today as one of the most highly respected real estate names in Melbourne.
George A. Thomson Snr., started at the age of 17 in 1925 with the firm J.J. Brenan, Carlton which originated in 1878. In March 1933, G.A. Thomson Snr., purchased the business and over the next 18 years he had to survive the Great Depression, the Second World War, Rent Control and Land Sales Control, whilst growing the business with acquisitions of small local rental rolls. J.J. Brenan was renamed G.A. Thomson & Co. Pty. Ltd. in 1956.
Later that year, after long term threats from the Victorian Government to acquire large portions of Carlton for Housing Commission flats and housing, threatening Landlords of several hundred terraces and cottages managed by Thomson with compulsory acquisition, the Company set about developing alternative accommodation south of the Yarra. The City of Caulfield became the chosen area to be developed. Consequently, the Thomson office in Murrumbeena was established. Under similar circumstances, an office at 120 Balcombe Road, Mentone was set up during 1968.
At this time G.A. Thomson Snr., retired from the business. Within a short time the Company was well established as the largest property management business in the area. From 1965 the business grew dramatically with acquistions of various long established agencies significantly increasing the client base and rent rolls of each office.
In 1994, the Company diversified and G.A. Thomson & Co. (Carlton) Pty Ltd and G.A. Thomson & Co (Malvern) Pty Ltd were established.
During 1996, the Company acquired another long established agency in the Brunswick area, which became G.A. Thomson & Co (Brunswick) Pty Ltd.
In 2001 we established a Flemington office in Buckley Street. In 2005, G.A. Thomson & Co (Murrumbeena) Pty Ltd was created including Carnegie as a branch Office. Later in 2005, G.A. Thomson & Co (Northcote) Pty Ltd was formed.
Further developments are likely to take place in the near future with this significant and most respected real estate organisation.
From an original staff of four, collectively we now employ in excess of 120 staff, most of whom are qualified either as Licensed Estate Agents or Agents Representatives and many of whom have served the Company for more than 15 years and of those, a significant number have been employed since they left School or University. |
